The harvest of our summer pears has ended and that of the winter pears has begun. Already we have bins upon bins of our hand-picked fruit arriving in our warehouse, where they will rest for a couple weeks in controlled atmosphere to optimize ripening, before going in our gifts and to your home! This year’s crop of Webster Comice Pears has been especially extraordinary—they’re large, sweet, and impeccably perfect. Everyone here is eagerly anticipating when we can ripen them ourselves and indulge in this annual treat.

Our Golden Italian Bosc pears still hang on the tree, gathering up sugars and getting bigger by the day. Rustic and timeless, they are the epitome of classical beauty.

The Columbia Red and French Green d’Anjou (see image to the left) pears will be harvested this week as well, and they appear to be large and succulent as usual. In 3-4 weeks of storage in our cold storage they will be ready to fully ripen and enjoy! Don’t forget that when you’re ready to enjoy this year’s crop of pears that like bananas they don’t ripen on the tree. The controlled atmosphere storage helps ripen them at a slow rate and develop their sweet taste so that when they arrive to your door they aren’t overripe, juicy messes. Most of our pears require several days of ripening at room temperature before they’re perfect for eating. That being said, get ready to enjoy the (literal) fruits of our labor!
