Seckel Pears

Good things often come in small packages these words are very true for the Seckel pear, a charming miniature variety that is the smallest, but also among the sweetest of all pears.

Seckels are tiny pears, with a chubby, round body, small neck, and short stem. Their skin is usually green, but frequently exhibits a dark maroon blush that sometimes covers the entire surface of the pear.

Seckels can easily be overshadowed by the larger varieties. However, it is their size that makes them a perfect choice for ornamental holiday displays, treats for children (who love their extremely sweet character), and cut in half as a plate garnish. They can also be eaten fresh, in salads or canned. Good-quality Seckel pears will be small or even bite-sized with no bruises and only a few minor scuffmarks. The coloring will be green with dark-red blush or nearly all red. Seckel pears are available August through January.
