Delicious Golden Pineapple are available year round from The Fruit
Company, with peak season being in the Spring.
The Pineapple is one of the few fruits that has been recognized not
only for it’s delicious flavor and unique texture, but for its
appearance as well. Classic European art used the pineapple shape as an
adornment on everything from knobs and handles to wallpapers, giving it
a place not only in their fruit bowls, but in other areas of the home
as well. This fruit was cultivated for thousands of years in various
Central American countries, today the production has spread with Hawaii
being at the top of the exceptional pineapple producing list. In a
nearly cylindrical shape with a hexagonally patterned spiky rind, a
pineapple can require a bit of effort to prepare. Most people cut the
leafy top off the fruit, and then slice lengthwise into quarters. Cut
out the center core and then trim off the rind to enjoy delicious
pineapple segments or slices. This is a popular fruit to be eaten raw,
though it is often used in a variety of culinary concoctions, with
baked ham and pineapple rings, and the famous pineapple upside down
cake as notable favorites. The juice is also used frequently on its
own, or combined with other fruit juices as a delicious beverage, or
garnish to other dishes.
Pineapples ripen quite well either on your countertop or in the
refrigerator. They should give a little to the touch and smell sweet
and juicy. Pineapples should have a greenish to yellow outer rind with
green leaves that may or may not be brown at the tips.
