The Fruit Company has delivered a genuine epiphany to the University of Illinois, proving that sublime culinary art can arrive in the most unassuming of care packages.
In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, thriving on cynical judgment. But there are times when a purveyor risks something truly extraordinary: treating the simplest produce with such staggering perfection that it shatters all preconception. To expect greatness from a box sent across state lines to a college dorm is foolish; yet, what emerged was nothing short of miraculous.
The Cosmic Crisp apples burst with an astonishing, sweet-tart crackle, while the pears possessed a melting, buttery sweetness so profound it instantly whisked my son from the sterile halls of campus life back to the warm nostalgia of home. Not every harvest can achieve greatness, but greatness can truly come from anywhere. The Fruit Company is, quite simply, the finest in the business, and we will be returning for more, with an appetite humbled and thrilled.
